I was miserable, eating like a fiend to quell my mutinous impulses, and longing to work for myself, preferably from the comfort of home. While working in the the film industry's not the worst job in the world – on the plus side they're not big on dress codes: no demands for women to wear expensive skirts or dresses, destroy their feet in high heels or suffer the imprisonment of panty hose – at the end of the day it's still a job. You're working on someone else's vision, not your own.
During that final stress-filled film project, I began spending time on the Internet, and an idea slowly took hold. One day I asked myself a life-changing question:
What do I know that other people want to know...and are willing to pay for?
Once I did some research and honed in on a topic that was in demand, I started looking for a means to publish my knowledge. I got very lucky. I discovered a program called Site Build It (or SBI).
It took me months of procrastination before I made the commitment. And more time to play around with ideas on how to approach the site. But I finally got focused and starting following the SBI manual, and things began falling into place. That site gave me a new career and a new life. You can certainly start a profitable business from home offering a service or product to local customers. You'll need to check into council regulations and purchase the required permits and licenses. Hang up your shingle, place ads in the local paper and other media, and wait for the calls from potential customers.
But what if you could repackage what you offer and sell it online? How would you feel about having the entire planet as your potential customer base instead of just local buyers. There's no law that says you can't have both.
Here are some of the advantages of marketing online:
Your web site is your online store front. You can offer as many products and services as you like. Storage is not an issue. Nor is rent, electricity or staff.
If you build your web site correctly, you can get free advertising on the search engines. It doesn't matter how large the competition is, you can still get on the first page of Yahoo and Google – at NO cost. Compare that to Yellow Pages advertising.
You can pay for ads if you choose for a few cents per click. And the people who click are already interested in buying your product.
You can make sure your message is undiluted. You can say as much or as little as you want about your business on your web site. You're not constrained by cost considerations as you are with print media ads.
You can stay in touch with established and potential customers by e-mail – at no cost to you.
You can build an e-mail list and promote new products and services to your subscribers again and again. And it's free – no paper or postage costs.
You can take advantage of a number of ways to promote your business online – all of them free.
